History of 100 Good Wishes

In parts of Northern China, when a baby is born, family and friends of the child donate pieces of fabric to the child's mother.  She then makes a quilt for the baby from the fabric, called a "Bai Jia Bei", otherwise known as a 100 Good Wishes Quilt.  It is said that the luck, energy and good wishes from all of the families and friends who contributed surround the child when she is wrapped in the quilt.  The quilt is then passed down from generation to generation.

With your assistance we would like to honor this tradition from our daughter's homeland.

How you can participate

1.  Please choose any 100% cotton fabric that you like.
2.  Pre-wash and cut an 8x8" square to be used for the quilt.
3. Include a smaller piece of this fabric to be placed in a memory book with a good wish.
4. Create your wish for our daughter on card stock.  Your wish can be anything - your hopes for her, thoughts on adoption, a poem, prayer, quote, verse, favorite saying, advice or anything meaningful to you.   And it can be decorated with scrapbook supplies, stamps, stickers, construction paper, or just simply typed or hand written.
5. Make sure you sign your name and the city and state where you live somewhere on your wish.
6.  Send us your wishes and fabric before April 30

Memory Book
The good wish with the small swatch of your fabric will be incorporated into a special "Good Wishes" Memory Book for our daughter.  We will be able to track the fabric in the quilt to the good wish by placing the smaller scrap of fabric in the Memory Book with the good wish, which she will receive when she is older.

What do "Wishes" look like?

As we receive our wishes over the next several months (we are expecting about 100+) we will post pictures of them here so you can see how creative people can be with them.

The Quilt
It's coming along slowly but surely
Beginning in January my mom and I will be starting to plan out the layout of the quilt. We figure it will be a great project to start (and hopefully finish) in 2008. Any progress (photos and such) will be posted here.

Thanks to the Janicki's (MA) for contributing material leftover from quilts that were made for their 3 children, but their grandmother.  It brings special meaning to know the fabric was also used as an heirloom piece for them as well.  We especially liked the extra wishes, and our favorite was "Daddy's Rules" :)  Mike, you and John will have to create a plan of attack for the boys one of these times we get together!

A special Thank You goes out to Maureen (MA), not only for hand delivering her wish to us, but also for her contributions to our Yard Sale over Memorial Day weekend.  Your wish/fabric is very appropriate given the homes you've had in ocean communities, and it will make a wonderful addition to our daughter's quilt!

It is the thoughtful, caring, and creative wishes from everyone that really has made the wait over the past several months, well...bearable!

Thank you to the Barber Family (MA) for your thoughtful, caring, and creative wish.  The time you took to cut out each little car and also find the song, "My Wish" by Rascal Flats was a pleasant surprise in addition to the wish and fabric!  Thanks for taking the extra time to make your wish extra meaningful to us all.

I've said this time and time again, we are not alone on this adoption journey.  The Willis family (MA) is adopting as well, from our same agency, and has the same LID (11/21/06) as we do...so that means when we travel to China, they'll be traveling right along with us.

Thank you so much for sending your creative "squish" to our Little One.  We look forward to getting to know you over the next year, and making the unforgettable journey to China with you!

Better late than never, right Marc?

Thanks to the help of Michelle, Marc's other half, we received our wish from the Tayler's today.  Perfect fabric from the school teacher and his family from CO.  Marc and I used to carpool to our Methods teaching classes in college together...he stuck with teaching... I didn't. (and now I'm wishin' I had summers off!!)

Despite the distance, I'm glad that we have kept in touch.  We look forward to showing our Little One the joy of skiing in CO with you and your family someday!

It's friends that stick together, no matter what the weather, that help you to enjoy the fun times and get through the tough ones.

Thanks to the Donnelly Family (MA) and Andrea Heizler (CT), both friends and sorority sisters of Julie's from college, for your wonderful wishes for our Little One's quilt.

I only hope that over the years John and I keep in touch with some friends that are not only OUR friends but become friends to our daughter and can watch her grow up to be a successful young woman, as the Houles have of me...and of course we can't forget bringing out some embarrassing photos every now and again as well.

Thanks to Tom and Donna, as well as the entire Houle Family for your beautiful (and creative) wishes for our Little One's quilt.

My 'second oldest' friend, who has participated in our quilt project so far.  Jen D. (MA), I only hope that you can share as many laughs with our daughter over her lifetime as we have shared since high school. (just leave a couple of stories to the imagination!)  And I hope that she finds the kind of friendship along her journey as I have found in you.

Noni (pronounced no-knee...right?), this quilt wouldn't be a family heirloom without your wish being part of it.  We look forward to having you spend an infinite amount of time with your grand-daughter, teaching her some "firsts" and creating some wonderful memories for you to take back to NC with you to hold you over until your next visit!

Donna is like a big sister to John.  Even though we don't see she and her husband very often, Donna and Chris are great role models for our Little One to look up to as they both can teach our daughter about perseverance and following her dreams.

Thank you to the Youngs (NH) for your wonderful wish and square.  I realize the two of you are busy, so thank you for taking a minute to welcome our daughter into our world.

I'm amazed at how many family members (more distant family members) that John and I have never met, have become part of this wonderful keepsake for our daughter.

Thank you to "Cousin" Elaine (OH) for your thoughtful wish for our daughter's quilt.

Well, we've reached 100, but our quilt is certainly not complete!  The pattern that we've picked out for our quilt calls for 121 squares/wishes, so we're not stopping at 100, so keep the wishes coming!!

Thank you to Margot & Jay (NH) for your fun-loving wish.  There will be many lessons in life that you can certainly share with and teach our Little One.  Your perseverance and optimism will be attributes that I hope you impart on our daughter as you watch her grow up.

How appropriate that our 100th Good Wish comes from our Little One's grandad-to-be.  What a sweet wish, and unique fabric.  It truly illustrates your love of gardening, and your excitement to having a "Little One" of your own.  We look forward to you sharing that love with your grand-daughter (as neither of us have a green thumb!).

More beautiful wishes and fabric contributed by those that we've met through various adoption websites and message boards.  One came from a nanny to a family who is also in the process of adopting a little girl from China as well and another from someone in our Autumn Angels group.

Thank you to Heidi Haroldson (MN) and The Jackins Family (CT) for your wonderful wishes.

Again, it's the participation of long-time family friends that makes this quilt so special to us.  Their kind words, their thoughtful wishes and beautiful fabric will help make this quilt a masterpiece.

Thank you Marilyn B. (NH) for your beautiful wish.

It's the support and excitement from family and old friends (that we consider family) that help make this process that much easier.  No doubt that it will be dreams and motivation that will help our daughter achieve great things.

Thanks to the Esteys (MA) and the LeClairs (ME) for their wonderful wishes for our Little One's quilt.

It's amazing how close you become to your friends' families over the years.  My sorority sister, my post-college roommate, my maid-of-honor, and my best friend has welcomed me into her family with open arms...as have her new in-laws.

These wishes are from the extended family of Kori.  Her cousin, her in-laws, and her husbands' grandmother.  I'm thrilled that they have been so supportive of us through this process.

Thank you to the Berardinos (SC), the Di Simones (MA) and the Douros (MA) for being part of this special project.

This project has a "domino effect".  The idea of making this quilt with fabric from people who are genuinely excited for us, is so unique, people who we know are sharing our story with family and friends and they too are sending wishes.

These five wishes stem from my great aunt and uncle and their family with whom they shared our story with.

Thank you to:
The Dillon Family (MA)
Carole Arenburg (MA)
Doris Razee (MA)
The Terpstra Family (OK)
(Kirsten, I remember when I used to babysit you, years and years and years ago. Talk about making me feel old!!)

"Jobs" you hold throughout your lifetime introduce you to some amazing and caring people.  The two wishes shown here are from two people that I have worked with, one currently as a co-worker, and one over seven years ago as a client.  To receive their thoughtful wishes for our daughter's quilt, makes it easier to go to work everyday knowing that I have somehow, along the way, touched their lives to have them care enough to participate in this project.

Thank you to Susan (NH) and The Rhodes Family (TX) for your beautiful wishes and ongoing support.

(and if you look closely, Susan has taken a strand of red thread and stitched a red line in her white fabric illustrating the Chinese Red Thread Proverb)

It's amazing to me that with all that people have to do in their lives, family members they have to take care of, they still have managed to take time and send us a thoughtful wish for our daughter-to-be.

The wishes received today from Debbie and Megan (MA) were a nice surprise as we met them not that long ago at the nursing home my grandmother resides.  Thank you not only for your wishes but for being such caring people towards my grandmother while you're up visiting at the Manor.

"The fence that makes good neighbors needs a gate to make good friends."

Although we have never had a fence in our yard(s), our doors have always been open to our neighbors, and over the years we've enjoyed the friendships that some neighbors have offered to us.

We'd like to thank several of our neighbors for their very creative additions to our 100 Good Wishes Quilt; Specifically Lynne Vassalotti and The Derderian Family, both from NH.

We spend most of our day at work (at least 8 hours), and it's those people that you are surrounded with during this time that you become close to, no matter how long you've been with a job :)

I'd like to Thank both Jodi S. and Karen A. (and Abby) for not only being great co-workers but becoming friends and sharing our excitement with us as we continue on our adoption journey.

And the Good Wishes just keep coming in.  It's wonderful to see how many people have participated in this special project, from perfect strangers to perfect friends and family members!

Today we received two wishes from friends of our family.  Thank you to the Ela Family (MA) and the Kingsley Family (NH) for their perfect wishes!

It really means a lot when people take the time to put together a wish for our Little One, especially when it's someone who has been a friend for 25+ years.

Today we received a wish from somone who has been a friend of John's since he was 8 years old.  Michael, and John, although usually many miles apart, have maintained a great friendship over the years.  He was also a Groomsman in our wedding and John also was in his when he married Jenn.

Thank you to the Shands (AZ) for your thoughtful, and very appropriate, fabrics and wish.

What a beautiful wish from the parents of my dear friend Kori.  Their fabric represents the flower Coreopsis, and they are going to plant a patch of pink coreopsis in their garden in honor of our Little One and when our daughter turns five, together they will transplant these flowers into our garden.

Special Thanks to the McGees (MA) for their very thoughtful wish and caring gesture.

We received two beautiful and creative wishes today from members of the OctDTC group.  Many thanks to the Sansone family (IL) and the Darlington Family (NJ).  I'm now beginning to piece together the fabrics in some sort of pattern and it's amazing how well these fabrics fit into the quilt.

I can't believe we've received 70 wishes already!  They are coming in by the envelope-full these days.

Our Little One's soon-to-be Grammy and Grampa, and of course it wouldn't be complete without one from Abbey (their dog), sent some beautiful fabrics and wishes, and included in the envelope was a wish in Memory of Gram (my Great Grandmother).  All wishes have a special meaning behind them, but this one brought loving tears to my eyes.

Also in that envelope was a wish from a wonderful woman who has dedicated her life to helping others, specifically my grandmother who is in a nursing home.  Tata, from Africa, sent a wish telling our daughter to appreciate the language and culture of other countries.  Our Little one being from China herself...your wish holds a special place in our heart.

WOW...we received an envelope full of wishes today!

When families separate, it's difficult at first.  When they remarry, it can be difficult too.  But when you are blessed with such a caring "extended" family from a remarriage like I have it makes that adjustment that much easier.

Thank you to (see list below) for your well selected fabric!

We received a wish from my "instant grandparents" (I was 13 when my mom remarried, so they instantly had a grand-daughter) and it brought tears to my eyes.  Beautiful seashell fabric (we all love the beach) along with a wish, but with this wish was a book "My Beautfiul Broken Shell", which they glued pieces of shell they had picked up while walking along the beach and glued them to the cover.

I look forward to being able to share that book of hope with our daughter as she grows older and begins to question and feel loss of her birthmother and homeland, hoping it shares words to comfort her.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful wish, Grammy Lammie and Beanie (FL & MA)

Today we received a wish from a couple who I initially introduced to each other while we were in college.  They have a beautiful family of their own, and I'm thrilled that they were able to participate in this quilt project.  Even though we don't see each other often, they'll always hold a special place in our hearts.

Thanks to the Bedell Family (RI) for your wish, which Erin, you're right, it says "girl" all over it! :)

Since receiving the wishes today, I've started to put connections to some fabric that we have already received.  The grouping of fabric has begun to take place in my mind.  (Great, now my mind will be racing a mile a minute at night while I'm trying to sleep as I visualize putting the quilt together piece by piece)

Thank you to:
The Weisberg Family (MA)
Janie Estey (IL)

This quilt is going to be absolutely beautiful!

The THREE wishes received today from a very close friend of our family put us over the 50 wish mark!  We're more than half way to our goal of 100 wishes.

A thank you to the Shand Family (NY & IN) for creating a wish from each of you.  The fabrics and personal wishes are indeed a special addition to our quilt.

I love how these wishes have all been so different.  Today we received some beautiful fabric with Chinese characters on it.  It's been so nice to receive fabric that both represents people's personality along with some representing our daughter's Chinese culture.

The creativity that people have shared with us through this project has been unmatched.  Everyone's personality has shown through in their wish, their fabric, and the notes that they send along with their mailing.

We received our first wish today with a dog on it...I'm actually surprised we haven't received more from all the dog lovers out there :)

It's funny how we received 3 wishes today, from the same family, but from all different areas of the country, and all with the same underlying theme.  Thank you to the following family members for their thoughtful wishes for our daughter.

How appropriate that we receive a wish with a quote from Confucious...keeping with the Chinese tradition.  Special thanks to the Cochranes (MA) for their wish and choosing a fabric that ties the dragonflies in with ladybugs, both having special meaning to us during this special time.

I don't know that there could be more suitable fabric and wishes to reflect personalities than these two we received from my maternal grandmother and grandfather.  Grampa having grown up on the farm and Grammy enjoying her gardens is symbolized in the lessons and fabrics they chose to share.

Thank you to "Great" Grammy and Grampa Estey for their wishes for our "Little One".

Its always nice to have someone to lean on who is going through the same things you are.  I have partnered up with the family who sent this wish to not only help each other through the long wait ahead of us to China, but also to support me as we both go through the weight loss journey over the next year with Weight Watchers.

Best of luck to you Cyndi, and thanks for the colorful wishes!

These were our first wish from friends from college...some of my sorority sisters and their families.  We met in 1992, on the first day of school, we were neighbors, and we've been close friends since that day.  Our sorority, Alpha Sigma Alpha, had a "mascot" of a ladybug...so ladybugs are not only special to the adoption community, but they've always had a special place in my heart.

Thank you to the following friends for their beautiful wishes.

Great minds think alike!  We received this wish today from someone who is adopting through the same agency we are, CAWLI, has the same DTC and LID dates we do, and their wish said the same thing ours did that we sent out to people.  "Live Well, Laugh Often, Love Much".  Great minds think alike.

Thanks to the Van Patten's from MA for their colorful and inspiring wish.

No wish drought here.  It's been a while since I've posted but we've had trouble with our camera as well as our computer and we've been traveling for work.  During this time we have managed to receive some more beautiful wishes.  Some from family and friends, and some from our DTC group.

The Bradich's (FL)
Aunt Margaret and Jackie (NH)
Julie Corman (MA)

A special Thanks to Aunt Betty and Uncle Bruce for forwarding our letter along to other family members who we didn't have contact information for.  It's amazing how many people want to be a part of this special project.

We received some wishes today from John's neighborhood families from growing up.  We only hope that our daughter is able to experience the joy of playing creatively  outdoors (like we both did) and develop the relationships with friends in our neighborhood as we both did growing up...as well as keep in touch with old co-workers such as I did with Anne.

Thank you to the following people for their beautiful wishes.

Our First Wish!!
1/17/07
It's no surprise that our first "Good Wish" came from my oldest and dearest friend and her family!

Jenn and I met when we were 3 and 4, respectively, and while growing up our friendship survived through the many many moves her family made, which put us miles and miles apart.  Despite the distance, twenty-nine years later we're still in touch, and we have our first wish for our daughter's quilt.

Thanks Jenn, JD and Jaxon...it meant a lot to receive your wish today.
